Philippine Integrative Medicine (PIM) Level 2 Training

Philippine Integrative Medicine (PIM) Level 2 Training
General Nakar, Quezon (June 2016)

In June 2016, INAM Philippines conducted the Philippine Integrative Medicine (PIM) Level 2 Training in General Nakar, Quezon Province, in partnership with the Local Government Unit (LGU) of General Nakar. This training gathered community health workers (CHWs), health advocates, and local partners to strengthen knowledge on common community health concerns, prevention strategies, and integrative healthcare approaches.

The PIM Level 2 Training was delivered through focused lectures and guided discussions, emphasizing practical, community-relevant health education rather than clinical skills training.

Understanding Common Community Health Issues

The lectures centered on the most common illnesses affecting communities, with particular focus on the digestive and respiratory systems. Participants explored:

  • Common digestive and respiratory conditions seen at the community level
  • Root causes of illness, including lifestyle, environmental, and social factors
  • Early signs and symptoms requiring attention
  • Practical prevention steps that can be applied in households and communities

These discussions helped participants better understand how everyday factors contribute to illness—and how prevention can significantly reduce disease burden.

Prevention, Herbal Medicine, and Proper Referral

A key component of the training was preventive healthcare, highlighting:

  • Health education strategies for families and communities
  • Safe and appropriate use of herbal and traditional medicines
  • When and how to provide basic community-level care
  • Clear guidelines on when to refer patients to clinics or hospitals

This integrative approach reinforced the importance of combining traditional knowledge, primary care, and formal healthcare systems to ensure patient safety and effective treatment.

Community Health Workers’ Case Sharing and Learning

Participants also shared real-life data and experiences from their communities, including the top 10 most common illnesses encountered by CHWs, the number of affected individuals, and the types of care and support provided to families under their supervision.

Through these case discussions, participants identified gaps, challenges, and priority needs—and explored ways to improve prevention efforts, health education, and community response to illness.

Strengthening Community-Based Healthcare

The PIM Level 2 Training reflects INAM Philippines’ commitment to community-based and preventive healthcare. By empowering CHWs and local health advocates with structured knowledge, practical frameworks, and integrative perspectives, the program supports healthier communities through early intervention, prevention, and appropriate referral.
